Emmaus Björkå is a Swedish solidarity organization founded in 1965. We employ 190 people and operate five stores in the south-west of Sweden where we sell second hand clothes, shoes, furniture etc. The revenue is used to fund cooperation with partners in the global South as well as Sweden. Today we work with partners in five countries with projects for people living under occupation, refugees, children, youth and people with disabilities. We receive funding from several Swedish back donors such as the Swedish Institute and Forum Syd. We are certified by “The Swedish Fundraising Control”.
After having worked with projects for many years we are currently involved in a process of initiating our first big program funded by Forum Syd. The program includes six partner organizations, three Palestinian organizations and three Sahrawi organizations. Geographically they cover the West Bank, Gaza, Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, occupied Western Sahara as well as Sahrawi refugee camps in Algeria. Thematically the program focuses on the struggle against occupation and specifically on youth. The aim is preparing the next generation of Palestinian and Sahrawi leaders to lead the struggle for self-determination and, ultimately, lead their countries after independence. The organizations work with media activism, advocacy work and/or youth leadership.
About the internship
As part of the program we will organize a five-day network meeting for all partner organizations in October, 2019 in Sweden.
The aims of the meeting are to:
- Strengthen the program network
- Build the capacity of partner organizations
- Follow up and plan the program
We are now looking for an intern to plan and organize the meeting in cooperation with our two program officers and our director of international work. This includes the practical aspects of the meeting (travels, visas, accommodation, food etc.) as well as planning the content of the meeting (set the schedule, procure experts to hold workshops etc.) and assist in the external communication about the meeting. During the meeting you will manage the practical issues that might arise as well as participate in workshops and sessions and get to know the work of the program organizations.
At Emmaus Björkå you would be part of our small team working with our international cooperation. We will work closely together to plan and organize the conference and you will be part of the decision making processes.
Palestinians living in the West Bank, Gaza and Lebanon have a very hard time meeting since the occupation of Palestine severely limits their freedom of movement. The same goes for Sahrawis in the occupied areas of Western Sahara and in the refugee camps in Algeria respectively. For Palestinians and Sahrawis to meet is even rarer. We have only facilitated one such meeting before and it was very clear that the meeting was important for the participants on many different levels.
Our internship is a rare opportunity to meet key actors in Palestinian and Sahrawi civil society but also a rare opportunity to facilitate for them to meet each other. Your work will be meaningful.
The internship lasts from May to October 2019.
We are looking for someone that:
- is organized and has the capacity to carry through work-tasks independently
- can communicate well in English
- is looking for a way to use their professional knowledge on global asymmetries of wealth and power and convert that knowledge into practice
- is interested in post-colonial theory, Palestine and/or Western Sahara
- is willing to do your internship between May and October 2019
It would be good if you:
- speak Spanish or Arabic
- share our values as a socialist and anti-imperialist organization
Your application should include your CV and a letter where you describe why you would like to do your internship at Emmaus Björkå and for how long you would be available.
